Examines social policy in former communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe and successor states to the former Soviet Union, and in the mature welfare states of Europe. Contributors overwhelmingly agree that it would be a mistake for the eastern economies in transition to simply copy the institutions of western welfare states. They examine conceptual issues of the market society, social policy in transition, and dynamics of income inequality. Chapters were first presented as papers at a symposium held at the Free University of Berlin. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
